Together again and greetings to all.

 

We have left Summer behind, The New Eclesiastical Year started on 1st of Sepember, Schools opened their doors again and October is on our doorstep. In short, Welcome Autumn!

 

Our Community follows the pattern and we continue to serve our duties to the best of our ability. 

 

VESPERS:

 

On Saturday 27 of September the Vespers for next day Sunday 28th, took place.

 

The suggestion of holding Vespers on the eve of every Sunday that we are  celebrating Matins and Holy Liturgy came from our Priest in Charge, Revd Oikonomos Gregorios Wellington and very much welcomed by the Trustees and Committee Members. 

 

It was the first "official" Vespers and the presence of a number of parishioners and friends was encoureging. From now on, Vespers will be celebrated regularly every fortnight.

BLESSING OF THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR: 

 

Yesterday, Sunday the 28th of September, with a number of pupils and parents amongst the Congregation and  after the Holy Liturgy, the Blessing for the New Accademic Year 2025 - 2026,  took place.

 

Our School's Headmaster, Dr Dimitris Voyiatzis,  the teachers, Miss Evdoxia Sakellaridou, Mrs Evgenia Kryovrisanaki, Mr Ilias Lantzas, our newest teacher, who resides in London, attended. We applaud their voluntery presence as it indicates  the dedication and devotion they have for their pupils and our School.    

 

Our Priest in Charge, Revd, Oikonomos Gregorios welcomed the New Academic Year by addressing all present:

 

<< Dear parents, friends and pupils,

Welcome to our community school!

 

I would like to congratulate you for the great effort you are making in studying the Greek language, and for sacrificing the time to learn, and to all the parents for bringing your children to attend the classes despite the challenges and business of modern life.

 

The Greek language spans the millennia, being the language of ancient philosophers and poets, the New Testament and Church Fathers and more recently the likes of Cavafy and Seferis, Hadjidakis and Savopoulos, and a whole host of others.

 

It is a language from which science and technology, as well as from which the humanities, languages and the arts, have drawn for their terminology and inspiration.

 

Along with Orthodox Christianity, family, pride in ones nation, be it Greece or Cyprus, the Greek language forms the essence of what it means to be a Greek.

 

Education is more than ever essential in success in life, and the ability to master a language, especially one with complex grammar and rich history, is an amazing skill. There is so much more to being able to speak and write Greek than just being able to speak to ones grandparents.

 

Our brain when we are younger is much more able to absorb new languages, as I found to my cost trying to lean Greek at 24 years old. Effort made now will pay massive dividends in the future!

 

I wish everyone every success in their studies this year.

 

May the three Hierarchs, St Basil the Great, St Gregory the Theologian and St John Chrysostom protect you and support you in your studies.
